The Galápagos vermilion flycatcher is a small insect-eating bird whose males are bright scarlet with a dark mask. Now recognized as the distinct species Pyrocephalus nanus after a 2016 split from the mainland vermilion flycatcher, it is found only in the Galápagos. It is in sharp decline on several islands from the introduced avian vampire fly and habitat loss, with fewer than 40 individuals left on Santa Cruz.

Best time to see it

Resident year-round in humid highland and transition forest; breeding is tied to the warm wet season, roughly January through May.
