The American flamingo is a tall pink wading bird that filter-feeds in shallow saltwater lagoons. It sifts brine shrimp and other invertebrates from the water, and this diet gives its feathers their pink color. The small Galápagos population is a year-round resident of coastal lagoons, and it is the only flamingo native to the islands.

A year-round resident that breeds opportunistically in coastal lagoons when water levels and food allow, rather than on a fixed calendar.
